Disclosures

Last updated: 2 May 2026. Maintained as a running log. Every entry below stays on this page in perpetuity, even if the underlying relationship has ended, so the historical record is intact and auditable.

This page is the running log of every supplier, manufacturer, retailer, butcher, agency or contributor relationship that has materially affected what Smoke and Lump has published. If a piece on this site has a disclosure box at the top, the substance of that box is captured here too.

The principle is simple: nothing comes onto this site that we wouldn’t be happy to write down here, in plain English, dated, named, and kept on the record.

For the editorial framework that governs how disclosures are written and where they appear on individual pieces, see the Editorial & AI Policy page.

How to read this page

Each entry below is one supply relationship. The columns:

  • Item or service — what was supplied
  • Supplier — who supplied it (named, with website where applicable)
  • Recipient — who at Smoke and Lump received it (Ben, Kate, the publication itself)
  • Cost — what we paid (zero, partial, full retail). If zero, the next column says why.
  • Type of arrangement — gift, lent for review, press sample, ambassador / paid arrangement, retail purchase, supplied to contributor’s separate brand
  • Date received / returned — when the item arrived, and (for lent kit) when it was returned
  • Pieces this affected — the URLs of any Smoke and Lump piece referencing or reviewing this supply
  • Notes — anything else a reader should know

Standing arrangements

These are the ongoing relationships, distinct from one-off supply events.

Affiliate networks

Smoke and Lump is a member of the following affiliate networks. Any link on this site to a partner retailer through one of these networks pays a commission to Smoke and Lump on a resulting purchase, at no extra cost to the visitor.

NetworkStatusNotes
Amazon Associates UKMember (pending application as content matures)Standard commission rates. No premium-rate arrangement.
AwinMember (pending application as content matures)Programmes joined as content goes live.
ImpactMember (pending application as content matures)As above.
ShareASaleMember (pending application as content matures)As above.

The full programme-by-programme breakdown lives on the Affiliate Disclosure page. We will update this table as each programme is approved and activated.

Affiliate commission never changes the verdict on a Tested piece. We have committed to that on the Editorial & AI Policy page and have built the editorial workflow to enforce it: the verdict is written before the commercial-link decisions are made.

Contributor identities and external brands

Smoke and Lump has named contributors who also operate their own platforms. The following table lists those external identities so readers can verify the identity links.

ContributorSmoke and Lump roleExternal brand / platform
Ben AustenPrimary author, editorDay job in product at Find.co (separate from Smoke and Lump)
Kate AustenContributor (recipes, meat reviews, technique)Operates kateaustenfood.co.uk

Where a contributor has their own brand, items may be supplied to the contributor via their own brand and reviewed on Smoke and Lump with the contributor’s permission. In those cases the disclosure box on the piece names both parties and the chain of supply explicitly. The standing template:

Supplied to [contributor name] by [supplier] for review on [contributor’s brand]; reviewed here on Smoke and Lump with [contributor’s name] permission. No payment from supplier to Smoke and Lump or to [contributor name].

This is a deliberate framework documented in our editorial policy. We accept the slightly higher disclosure overhead because it lets contributors with their own brands contribute substantively to Smoke and Lump without conflating the supply chains.

Individual supply log

Newest entries at the top.

Big Green Egg Large — gift from Kate Austen, received Christmas 2025

  • Item: Big Green Egg Large kamado (one unit, with accessories)
  • Supply chain:
    1. Originally supplied by Big Green Egg to Kate Austen (Ben’s sister and a Smoke and Lump contributor) as part of a paid content partnership in which Kate created cooking content for Big Green Egg using the unit. That partnership has since ended.
    2. Subsequently given by Kate to Ben as a personal Christmas gift, December 2025.
  • Recipient: Ben Austen, for personal use at home in London. Owned outright.
  • Cost to Smoke and Lump: Zero. No payment to or from any party in the chain. The unit is Ben’s personal property.
  • Current commercial relationships: Smoke and Lump has no commercial relationship with Big Green Egg as manufacturer, with any retailer, or with any third party with regard to this unit. Kate Austen’s content partnership with Big Green Egg ended prior to the launch of Smoke and Lump as a publication.
  • Date received: December 2025 (Christmas gift from Kate)
  • Date returned: Not applicable — owned outright.
  • Pieces this has affected: Will anchor the upcoming BGE Large Tested by Ben review (publishing shortly), and is expected to inform multiple subsequent pieces (gasket replacement, accessory comparisons, fuel tests, recipe pieces using the Egg).
  • Notes: We log this disclosure with the full supply chain because (a) the unit was originally supplied through a paid content partnership (Kate’s, now ended), even though we ourselves have no such relationship, (b) Kate is a named contributor on this site, so the dual-source disclosure framework applies (per the Editorial Policy), and (c) we’d rather over-disclose than under-disclose. Reviews of the BGE Large on this site are written without supplier-relationship pressure — we have none and Kate’s is over. Big Green Egg as a manufacturer has no awareness of this publication, has not been shown drafts, and has no editorial input.

Future entries — every supply event from publication date onwards will be added here, dated, with the same six fields plus notes. Entries are appended, never deleted. If a relationship ends, the entry stays on the page and the End date is added to the Notes column.

Things that have NOT happened

We list this section because absence-of-something is harder to verify than presence-of-something. The following types of arrangement do not exist on Smoke and Lump as of the last-updated date above:

  • No paid placements. No manufacturer or retailer has paid for a piece, paid for a verdict, or paid for placement of any sort.
  • No sponsored content. No piece on this site is sponsored. We do not run sponsored posts.
  • No press junkets. Neither Ben nor Kate has accepted travel, hospitality or hotel arrangements from a manufacturer or retailer.
  • No ambassador deals. Neither Ben nor Kate is an ambassador, paid or unpaid, for any kit, charcoal, butcher, or BBQ-adjacent brand on this site.
  • No retainer arrangements. No supplier pays Smoke and Lump a retainer, a content fee, or any other recurring sum.

If any of the above changes, the next-updated version of this page will move the relevant item out of this list and into the Standing Arrangements table or the Individual Supply Log, with the date the relationship began and the financial terms.
