The best kamado heat deflector in the UK for 2026: six picks from £38.90 to £245

A kamado heat deflector is a ceramic plate that sits between the fire and the food, so you cook indirect, with the heat coming round the food rather than straight up at it. Some people call it a plate setter. Every long cook I’ve done on my Big Green Egg Large has been indirect, on the ConvEGGtor (ceramic deflector) that came with it: pulled pork, pork belly burnt ends, bone-in pork loin and lamb rump. That’s the one deflector here I’ve used. What I say about the other five comes from the makers’ own specs and from people who’ve cooked with them, and I checked every price in October 2026.

Best Big Green Egg deflector: the ConvEGGtor, £105

The ConvEGGtor is Big Green Egg’s own deflector, a round ceramic plate that sits over the fire. Mine came with my Large, and a replacement for the Large is £105 at Big Green Egg UK.

I’ve done more than twenty cooks on mine and it hasn’t cracked or chipped. For a long cook I set it in, put a drip tray with foil in it on top, then the grid and the meat. You can still see the fire glowing round the edge, because it doesn’t seal against the wall, and that’s fine. If you’ve got an Egg that came with one, you don’t need anything else to cook indirect.

Best for cooking two ways at once: Big Green Egg Dual Zone Essentials Kit, £245

The Dual Zone kit is a basket that holds two half-moon ceramic deflectors and two half-moon grids on two levels, so you can cook direct on one side and indirect on the other. It’s £245 for the Large at Big Green Egg UK, and Big Green Egg’s site says every new Large now comes with it. If your Egg came with a ConvEGGtor, like mine, it’s an upgrade.

I haven’t used one. Big Green Egg’s site says it makes it easier to use the Egg’s cooking modes at the same time.

Cheapest Big Green Egg deflector: Half Moon Ceramic Deflector, £40

Big Green Egg sells a single half-moon deflector for the Large at £40. Half the fire is under it and half isn’t, so one side cooks indirect and the other direct. Big Green Egg sells it for baking too.

I haven’t used one.

Best Kamado Joe deflector: Half-Moon Deflector Plates, £54.99

Kamado Joe’s half-moon deflector plates come as a pair, at £54.99 for the Classic or £79.99 for the Big Joe on Kamado Joe’s UK site. With both in you cook indirect across the whole grill, and with one in you get a direct side and an indirect side.

I haven’t used them. Mark Jenner at Food Fire Friends, who’s cooked on Kamado Joes for years, uses one for a direct side and an indirect side, and both together to bake, roast or smoke.

Best Kamado Joe upgrade: SlōRoller with Rack, £179.99

The SlōRoller is a ceramic insert Kamado Joe says turns its kamado into a smoker. It’s £179.99 for the Classic, or £269.99 for the Big Joe, on Kamado Joe’s UK site, and Birstall had the Classic one at the same price. The Classic III and Big Joe III come with one.

I haven’t used one. Mark Jenner at Food Fire Friends says it’s made his smoking and roasting more consistent.

Best Monolith deflector: Monolith .55 Classic Deflector Stone, £38.90

Black Box BBQ sells Monolith’s two-piece deflector stone for the .55 Classic, with a lifter, at £38.90.

I haven’t used one, and Monolith’s other 55cm kamados may need a different stone, so check it fits yours before you buy.

How to reduce the heat in a kamado

Close the vents, and go slowly. To hold 120°C (250°F) on my Egg, the bottom vent is about 99% shut, and to hold 220°C (430°F) it’s open by a finger or two. Small changes make a big difference, so move the vents a little at a time. If you overshoot, the ceramic holds the heat, and it can take an hour to come back down.

How to choose a kamado heat deflector

  • You’ve got a Big Green Egg that came with a ConvEGGtor: you don’t need anything else to cook indirect.
  • You want to cook direct and indirect at once on an Egg: the Dual Zone kit, or a single half-moon for £40.
  • You’ve got a Kamado Joe Classic: the half-moon plates, and the SlōRoller if yours didn’t come with one.
  • You’ve got a Monolith Classic: the .55 stone at Black Box BBQ.

Common questions

Do heat deflectors really work?

Yes. Every long cook I’ve done on my Egg has been on the ConvEGGtor, and it holds a low heat for hours.

Do I need a deflector for low-and-slow?

On a kamado, yes. For pulled pork I run my Egg at 110°C (230°F), indirect, with the ConvEGGtor in.

Does a deflector fit any kamado?

No. Each one’s made for a size and a make, so a Big Green Egg Large ConvEGGtor is for a Large, and Kamado Joe’s plates come in Classic and Big Joe sizes.

Sources and how I checked

  • Big Green Egg UK: the ConvEGGtor, Dual Zone kit and half-moon deflector, prices for the Large, October 2026.
  • Kamado Joe’s UK site: half-moon plates and SlōRoller, October 2026. Birstall for the SlōRoller.

  • Mark Jenner at Food Fire Friends, on the Big Joe III, its deflectors and the SlōRoller.

How I got this, and what I’ve spent

My Big Green Egg Large was a Christmas present from my sister Kate, and the ConvEGGtor came with it. Nobody sent me any of these deflectors, and nobody at Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, Monolith or the shops has seen this before you have. None of the links here are affiliate links, so nothing here earns a commission.

Final verdict

If your kamado came with a deflector, start with that. Mine’s done more than twenty cooks and I’ve never needed anything else. If you want to cook direct and indirect at the same time, Big Green Egg’s Dual Zone kit or Kamado Joe’s half-moon plates do it.
